SMTube - Play and download Youtube videos

SMTube allows to search, play and download Youtube videos. Videos are played back with a media player (by default SMPlayer) instead of a flash player, this allows better performance, particularly with HD content. SMTube also allows to download the videos, with the quality you choose. Several videos can be downloaded at a time.

SMTube is included in SMPlayer's menus, to run it just select Youtube browser in the Options menu in the SMPlayer main window, or just press F11.

The Youtube Browser

This tool allows you to browse among the most popular videos. You can search for a video typing a term in the search field at the bottom of the window. To play a video, just double click on it.

Download Youtube videos

To download a Youtube video, right click on a video and select Record video. You can download several videos at a time. Click on the blue arrow to play a video or click on the Open folder button to open the folder where the videos have been saved.

Choose the quality

The quality and format (mp4/flv) can be selected in the settings window. It's possible to download HD videos.
The available qualities are:

  • MP4: 360p, 720p, 1080p
  • FLV: 226p, 360p, 480p

How to get SMTube

* Windows

The installation is very easy, just download one of these packages, and follow the steps of the installer. You must have SMPlayer installed. Click here to get SMPlayer if you don't have it.

The installer is also valid for SMPlayer portable.

* Linux

On Linux, SMTube is available in a separated package. To install it, run these commands in a terminal (ubuntu):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install smtube

  • It's now a stand-alone application and you can select the video player to use (smplayer, mplayer, vlc, dragon player, totem or gnome-mplayer).
